Public input sought for Routt County fairgrounds

Community members can help update facility’s master plan

— Members of the community often approach Routt County Fairgrounds Manager Jill Delay to give her suggestions about how the fairgrounds should be used.

People have a chance to publicly air and discuss those suggestions this week. Delay said she hopes county residents will attend a public forum Wednesday to discuss an update to the Fairgrounds Master Plan, which was adopted in 2000. The forum is part of the Fair Advisory Board's meeting at 7 p.m. at the South Routt School District administrative offices in Oak Creek, behind Soroco High School.

It's the first of three meetings to gather input from the public. The second will be held March 10 in Steamboat Springs. The third is scheduled for April 14 in Hayden.

Delay said it's important for members of the community to provide feedback because they are the fairgrounds' users. And they can have a say in its future, she said.

"It's the community's fairgrounds," Delay said. "It belongs to the community."

The public forum will include a review of the 2000 master plan, current and future uses, existing conditions and infrastructure and general economics in addition to the discussion that will allow members of the community to provide input, Delay said.

She said community feedback will provide her and the Fair Board with information to prioritize the future of the fairgrounds. Delay said in addition to fair activities, the board also is looking for suggestions about other events that could be held at the fairgrounds throughout the year.

"This is really the people's opportunity to let us know what they think, which is a definite priority for this process," she said.

For example, Delay said a group has approached her about hosting more high-end horse shows and equestrian events at the fairgrounds.

Delay encouraged people who don't use the fairgrounds to attend the forums. She said she'd like to hear suggestions from anyone. Delay said the priority for her and the Fair Board is to draft an update that reflects what's in the best interest of the community to get the best uses out of the fairgrounds.

Members of the community can also visit Facebook pages dedicated to the fairgrounds and the Routt County Fair to make suggestions, Delay said.

She said the goal is to have the master plan update completed by this year's fair.
