Prep sports roundup: Steamboat basketball girls team holds on

— Hannah Moore canned a 3-point shot late in the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team’s game at Delta on Friday, giving her team a 45-44 victory and keeping the squad perfect in league play.

That the team even needed her heroics came as a bit of a surprise after Steamboat led by 10 points at halftime.

“It was up down and all around the whole game,” Sailors coach John Ameen said. “We came out real strong, but we didn’t shoot well from the line. We compounded that by not taking care of things at the defensive end.”

Colleen King finished with 19 points. Moore had 12.

The Steamboat boys basketball team beat Delta on Friday night, 57-53, improving to 6-5 and 3-0 on the season.

“It was a dogfight the whole way,” coach Luke DeWolfe said. “We were ahead the whole time but just never separated. We had mediocre shooting, and they just made us work.”

Sailors skiers go big at Beaver Creek race

Tommy Lyon led the way for the Steamboat Springs High School boys Alpine team Friday in a Beaver Creek slalom race. Lyon won the event, posting a pair of blazing runs down the course that accounted for two of the day’s four fastest marks. His combined time was more than five seconds ahead of second place.

Jeffrey Gay was ninth for Steamboat, and Alec Schaffer was 10th. The team finished second.

On the girls side, a third-place finish from Sarah White and four other top-10 Sailors performances helped lift the squad to the team championship. Suzanne Lyon was sixth, Katie Hostetler was seventh, Linnea Dixson was ninth, and Ali Pougiales was 10th.

Hayden boys basketball falls to Meeker squad

The Hayden boys basketball team came up short in its bid to knock off league-leading Meeker on Friday night. The Tigers lost, 64-54.

“It was close throughout the ballgame,” coach Mike Luppes said. “We solidly out rebounded them. That was one key, but turnovers were a big difference in the game.”

Graig Medvesk led the Tigers with 18 points. Raul Valdez had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Rene Valdez scored eight points and had 12 boards.

Hayden, 7-4, plays at 3:30 p.m. today at De Beque.

Hayden girls beat rival Meeker in 44-31 win

It was a matchup that produced four classic basketball games a year ago.

On Friday night, the showdown between Hayden and Meeker was just ugly, Tigers coach Eric Hamilton said. Still, he and his team were thrilled to be loading the buses and heading for home victorious after a 44-31 win.

“We played about two quarters, max, but we’re happy. We’ll take that league win,” he said.

Calla Manzanares led the way for Hayden with nine points. Rachael Koehler and Erin Koehler each scored eight.

Hayden, 7-3, returns to the court today for a 1 p.m. game at De Beque.
