Powers’ big night can’t rally Steamboat boys to victory against Grand Junction

— A night after an exciting season-opening win to kick off the winter, the Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team took its first loss Friday night against the defending 5A Southwestern League champs.

The Sailors led, 27-26, at halftime against Grand Junction High School, a 21-game winner a season ago, but they couldn’t weather a second-half onslaught from the Tigers, falling 64-52 at the Warrior Challenge.

Despite the halftime lead, Grand Junction raced out after halftime, taking a 35-27 lead about midway through the third quarter. The Tigers held on from there, sinking the Sailors to 1-1 on the young season.

Steamboat junior Robi Powers kept his team in it with a game-high seven 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough.

The Sailors will finish out the Warrior Challenge on Saturday with a 3:15 p.m. contest against Grand Junction Central, the round-robin tournament host.
