Possibility of snow tonight

Snow. For days, that word has been a rumbling undercurrent in Routt County conversation, soliciting groans from some and cheers from others.

Temperatures will steadily drop today as cold air moves in from Canada and the Yukon, National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Daniels said.

As the temperatures drop, precipitation in the air could turn from rain to snow.

“I think the mountains will see some in the next couple days,” Daniels said. “But right now, the system is not carrying a whole lot of moisture.”

Daniels predicts snowfall of 1 or 2 inches with a dusting of snow at about 8,500 feet tonight.

“We’re going to see a hint of fall-time weather,” Daniels said. “We’ll have a benign period Sunday through Thursday, but (Labor Day weekend) could see another shot of cooler temperatures.”

Attendees to the long list of outdoor events scheduled for that weekend may be doing so wearing sweaters.

The Steamboat Springs Airport has scheduled a two-day Vintage Aircraft Fly-In. Oak Creek plans to have four local bands at Decker Park as the last of the town’s free concert series and Steamboat’s Free Summer Concert Series will wrap up with two shows on Headwall — Little Feat and Delbert McClinton.
