Ponderosa runs away from Steamboat boys

The Sailors were simply outmatched.

That was the diagnosis Saturday from Steamboat Springs High School boys coach Mike Vandahl after his team’s 81-43 loss to Ponderosa in the Brenda Patch Tournament at Roaring Fork High School.

Steamboat was playing without two seniors and got into foul trouble in the second half. It then struggled against Ponderosa’s full-court pressure.

“We really struggled with the press,” Vandahl said. “We were playing quite a few young guys. That’s not an excuse, but we were a little overmatched. On the positive side, we see what we need to work on. It’s early in the season, so we’re not hanging our head or anything.”

Senior Ethan Riniker led the team with 15 points. He also grabbed six rebounds and four steals. Mac Riniker, a freshman, had 10 points, four boards and four steals.

Steamboat, 1-1, next returns home for the annual Steamboat Shootout, which begins Thursday night at the high school.
