Poll shows Salazar leading Tipton

Democrat gets 53 percent from 456 voters

— A recent poll shows U.S. Rep. John Salazar, a Manassa Democrat, leading Republican challenger Scott Tipton of Cortez by 11 percentage points, 53 percent to 42 percent.

Libertarian Bob Sargent received 4 percent of the vote.

Sponsored by KUSA-TV in Denver, national survey firm SurveyUSA conducted the poll from Aug. 12 to 14. The poll asked 456 “likely voters” in Colorado’s Third Congressional District which candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives – Salazar, Tipton or Sargent – they would vote for if they “were standing in the voting booth right now.”

The poll cites a margin of error of about 5 percent.

Survey results show Salazar leads by 23 points among women, but trails Tipton by 1 percentage point among men.

Salazar received 92 percent of votes cast by Democrats. Tipton received 75 percent of votes cast by Republicans.

Unaffiliated voters gave Salazar 62 percent of their votes, compared with 27 percent for Tipton.

The Third Congressional District includes 29 counties across the Western Slope and southern Colorado. Survey results also showed that President Bush’s approval rating in the district, according to the 456 voters, is 43 percent.
