Police: Teen brandished gun in argument with neighbor

— A 17-year-old Steamboat Springs boy was held overnight at the Moffat County Youth Care Center in Craig on suspicion of felony menacing after allegedly brandishing a shotgun outside his home at Copper Mountain Estates Thursday evening.

Police Sgt. Jason Patrick said the 17-year-old was arguing with a 16-year-old neighbor about a traffic altercation that occurred a few days prior, when the older boy went into his house and came out carrying a shotgun.

Patrick said the older boy’s mother took the gun away from her son and took him into the house. The younger boy then called police around 7 p.m.

“We don’t know for sure if he pointed it at him because their stories conflict at that point,” Patrick said.

During the incident, the younger boy hid behind his vehicle, Patrick said. Other neighbors standing nearby reportedly witnessed the confrontation.

Officers hope to determine more details, such as whether the gun was loaded, as the investigation continues.

The 17-year-old was placed into custody Thursday, detained at the Steamboat Springs Police Department on suspicion of felony menacing and then taken to the Moffat County Youth Center to be held overnight. He returned to Steamboat Friday to be advised of the charges he faces.
