Plane wreck remains on bottom of lake

— A single-engine plane with four victims inside will remain in 46 feet of water in a remote lake in Northwest Colorado until a private helicopter with enough power is found to lift it out, authorities said.

“We feel bad that we can’t get this solved,” said Norm Wiemeyer, chief of the National Transportation Safety Board’s Denver office. “We would like to get this over as soon as possible for the relatives’ sake.”

The plane, carrying four Reno, Nev., men, went down May 29 in Lake Marvine, which is in the White River National Forest.

On board the plane were pilot Richard “Dan” Filippe, Ross Jones and brothers Jon and Mark Peters.

The men were on their way in the rented plane to Jefferson County Airport in Denver from Reno for a Stanley Cup finals hockey game.

The blue and white Piper Cherokee PA-28 was found Saturday night in the murky, mossy water of Lake Marvine, which is 30 miles southeast of Meeker.

The plane had been missing for 11 days when it was found on the bottom of the middle of the lake.

Authorities have been unable to secure a helicopter to pull the plane out of the lake, which is at an elevation of 9,300 feet and surrounded by rocky and rugged terrain.

“Helicopters are tough to come by,” Wiemeyer said.
