STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A bear cub whose feet were severely burned at the 416 Fire near Durango has recovered, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

“The burns have healed nicely, and at this point I’d say her paws are about 95 percent healed,” Michael Sirochman was quoted as saying in the release. Sirochman is the manager of the Frisco Creek facility where the cub is being treated.

The cub, which weighed 10 pounds when it was spotted by firefighters June 22, has grown to 26 pounds. Now that her paws are healed, she has been moved from isolation into a pen with four other cubs, according to the release.

After the bears begin hibernating this winter, Parks and Wildlife officials plan to move them into dens in January.

“And when spring comes, they’ll emerge from the dens and be on their own to start their lives again as wild bears,” according to the release.
