It’s been a short and successful season so far for Bob Milne’s Steamboat Peewee hockey team.

Milne and his players will have a lot better idea what the team’s 4-0 record means in just a few days. The squad is one of two Steamboat Springs teams competing Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Ski Town Tournament at the Howelsen Ice Arena.

Action in the Peewee and Midget brackets gets underway at 2 p.m. Friday, and Milne said his team won’t have to wait for a challenge. The team’s first opponent, Littleton, easily could prove to be the best.

“They are already 7-0,” he said, well aware of one his team’s main rivals and its capabilities. “Littleton has one of the best programs in the state. Their Peewee team is well coached, and we’ll know a lot more after that game.”

The Steamboat squad is coming off a pair of impressive games last weekend, when it overcame one of its most frustrating hurtles from last year. Steamboat beat the Renegades, a Denver team, twice after failing to do so in five attempts last winter.

The team will try to carry that momentum into the home tournament.

It is led by top scorers Jackson Perry and Patrick Milne and relies on strong goalkeeping from Trent Trask and Connor Glynn.

“We’re a fun team to watch,” Milne said. “We’ve got some speed, and we’re excited to play at home. We’ve played on two of the smallest rinks in our league already, and that didn’t really play to our strength. We’re anxious to get in some games on our own rink and take advantage.”

Steamboat’s Midget division entry – which first plays at 3:15 p.m. Friday – enters the tournament equally optimistic but with slightly different concerns.

Coach Mike McGlone said he is most worried about fielding enough players to stay competitive.

“We only have 10 or 11 players on the roster now. It’s tough to even practice with just 10 guys,” he said.

The troubling numbers don’t mean the team will be a doormat, however.

The tournament will mark the squad’s first action of the season. If it can carry over its success from a year ago, McGlone said, he’ll be plenty happy.

“We won about two-thirds of our games last year,” he said. “We should be pretty good again. We had a good end to our season, and much of that team is back.”

The tournament features 10 teams, five in each age division. Each squad is guaranteed four games with play wrapping up early Sunday afternoon.
