Paula Salky: Honor those who have served on Memorial Day

People, there is nothing happy about Memorial Day.

Yes, you can be happy to celebrate that you live in a great county. Yes, you can be happy to spend quality time with your family and friends over a three-day weekend, but please, take a moment and remember what this day is about and share it with your friends, family and children.

Go to a Memorial Day ceremony. Steamboat Springs has one of the best. Put a flower at a gravesite. Walk in a parade. Talk about the sacrifices that people have made so we can live free.

Honor the men and women, like my stepbrother Captain Robert M. Secher, USMC, who died serving our country in war. Do something nice to honor the men and women that serve and served our country.

Every year, I feel that I can educate a few people and perhaps you can enlighten some of your own friends and family. And at the very least … please don’t tell someone to have a Happy Memorial Day. It’s the very least you can do.
