Paul Wellman: Let’s do business with everyone

As the blizzard of propaganda assaults from all sides, freezing our brains into a perpetual state of fear and loathing against the Evil Empire, I ask that we try and see what is really going on and take dramatic steps to plow through the blizzard and come out into a state of hope and happiness. It is not only possible to do this but is critical to our survival.

In WWII, our most important ally Russia lost about 10 million troops, about 10 million civilians with about six million dead to disease and starvation due to the conflict. Without Russia’s sacrifices, many believe WWII would have been won by Germany.

My dad told of being stopped from advancing into Germany from the east,  just chill out and let the Russians take Berlin. The U.S. was saving their own men and materials at the expense of the Russians in this epic struggle.

However, after WWII, Russia was seen to be a growing threat to America’s hegemony, over most of the world, due to about everyone else in the world having been decimated by the war. It was determined that Russia had to be held down and prevented from growing its economy. The propaganda machine geared up, and we had the Evil Empire — be afraid, be very afraid. That was the beginning of the Cold War.

In the 1950s, I remember how Senator Joseph McCarthy rose to national prominence by initiating a probe to ferret out communists holding prominent positions in government and private. During his investigations, safeguards promised by the Constitution were trampled.

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

A second benefit to the newly minted U.S. military/industrial complex was they had created the perfect excuse to go nuts and spend vast amounts on building up our already bloated military. Our budget is currently around $780 billion compared to Russia’s $60 billion, and they are cutting their military spending. They are instead working on building their economy and gaining ground.

I urge you all to go to Consortiumnews.com and look at the July 24, 2017, report, “Intel Vets Challenge ‘Russia Hack’ Evidence.” It is damning evidence against the accusations of Russian interference.

To those voicing outrage about Trump dissing on the intelligence branches of our government, I vividly remember the lies these propaganda machines put out that got us into Vietnam, Iraq, Libya and several more illegal and immoral wars. A healthy skepticism is crucial.

Trump makes my skin crawl. However, he seems to be doing amazing things with Russia, North Vietnam and, hopefully, China, in trying to open the doors to negotiation and cooperation. If he will pull his head out about Iran, he will be on a roll.

Let’s do business with everyone.
