Pair of Steamboat runners advance

Joel Reichenberger

The high school cross-country season already may be history, but the running season didn’t end with the regional meet for a pair of Steamboat runners.

Meg O’Connell and Alex Tumminello both competed in Centennial at a Junior Olympics state championship event and both managed to qualify for a regionals race Nov. 17 in New Mexico. Tumminello was seventh in her race, the 5K intermediate girls division, while O’Connell was second in the 5K young women’s race.

“It was mostly a flat course, but there were three very steep hills and those were kind of rough and hard to get up,” O’Connell said. “It wasn’t the fastest course, but it wasn’t slow, either.”

The top 25 racers in each division qualified.

O’Connell said her continued quest to run is a no-brainer. She said she’s not entirely sure she’ll make the trip to New Mexico but that she’s all-but committed.

“I love running. If I don’t run, I’ll go insane,” she said. “It’s fun for me to have something to train for, not just to train but to stay in shape. Plus, I want to get my name on the map so I have a shot at running in college.”
