Pair of freshmen lead Soroco girls hoops to blowout road win

Ben Ingersoll

— Putting freshmen on a varsity basketball floor sometimes can spell trouble for a team’s roster, but for Soroco High School girls basketball coach David Bruner, his youngsters quickly are asserting themselves.

The Rams picked up a 77-49 win at North Park on Friday night behind freshman Morgan George’s 20 points and DaKota Bruner’s 16. The win pushed Soroco to 12-4 on the season.

David Bruner said things got tough in the early going with his Rams up only 11-8 after the first quarter. But Soroco quickly built a 35-22 lead, which ballooned to a 28-point victory.

“We weren’t shooting the ball real well at the end of the first quarter,” Bruner said. “We turned it on in the second. In the fourth quarter, our conditioning took over. We just kept running.”

Right behind George’s and DaKota Bruner’s big scoring nights was junior Jessica Rossi with 15. Kellen Garrity pitched in 10.

The Rams take the court again Saturday for a 1 p.m. home game against West Grand.

“They played super hard like they always do,” Bruner said about his young team. “We are where we want to be with 12 wins. We have to be ready to play Saturday, though.”
