Owner of Organizing by Olympia hopes services will help customers declutter, find that fresh start feeling
It’s the feeling that Olympia von Berg gets from decluttering and organizing her own things that drove her to start her own business, Organizing by Olympia.
“I love organizing and decluttering my own items and the things that I have and the feeling I get once that’s done because it is like a fresh start, or a new beginning,” von Berg said. “I feel like that really is why I do this for clients, and they get to that point where they say, ‘Oh my gosh, thank you for getting this off my shoulders.’ That’s what I like about this job.”
It’s been about six weeks since von Berg started the Steamboat Springs professional organizing business, which offers customized services to clients in the communities of Steamboat Springs, Clark, Hahns Peak, Oak Creek, Milner, Hayden and Craig.
“There’s no typical client and every client is totally different,” von Berg said. “Once you hire me, I will come into your home and we will discuss what your ‘pain points’ are — some people focus on certain areas like the closet or the kid’s room, but some people are like the whole house.”
In many cases, von Berg’s process begins with a decluttering process where she addresses the things her clients don’t want anymore. Then she will pack those items up and take them to the LiftUp of Routt County thrift store or the Déjà Vu Consignment Boutique.
Based on what her clients want to keep, von Berg then comes up with a plan for organizing those items and suggests storage solutions that will work. She either recommends those items so clients can purchase them, or she can handle those details. She said every job so far has been unique, and she tailors her services to the needs of each client.
von Berg offers both home and business services, including — but not limited to — household organization, downsizing, seniors, move management, storage units, garage clean up, estate sales, and task and time management. She can also plan events and meetings, workplace systems and processes, and is eager to work with real estate agents and homeowners to get properties ready to go on the market.
For those that want to do the work themselves, von Berg offers a service where she can go into a home and look at the pain points, and then make recommendations. She takes notes, puts together an action plan and sends her advice to them. She also sends product links, screenshots and different things that she recommends doing.
“It depends on what the client wants,” von Berg said. “Some people might be like, ‘Look I hate my closet. I want a brand-new closet and I want you to organize a closet with my stuff in it.’ A lot of the time, we want to make an inventory of the stuff that we already have, see how much storage space we are going to need and what that space is going to look like when we are done. I can go through the design process with people if that is something they want to do, and it really depends on people’s budget at the end of the day.”
von Berg has always had a profound aspiration to assist individuals in managing their possessions effectively, and she has naturally assumed the role of an organizer in the lives of those around her — whether that is decluttering chaotic spaces, tackling overstuffed storage units, or helping with moves or planning trips and events.
Since moving to Steamboat Springs four years ago, von Berg has worked as an event planner, helping organize events like the Emerald Mountain Epic and Winter Carnival this past winter. Her hope is that Organizing by Olympia will become a new outlet where she will be able to use her passion for organization to offer services that will benefit the communities she hopes to serve. “I’m a professional organizer, so basically I help people with their stuff,” von Berg said. “I have some clients that have a very clear vision of what they want, and they just need help doing it, and I have other clients that have no idea of where to even begin. That is where I come in to help guide them through it.”
