Professor to discuss experiments in space at Rotary Club meeting

Herman H. Vandenburgh, Ph.D., emeritus professor of pathology at Brown University, will present “From Skeletal Muscle Wasting in Outer Space to New Treatments for Boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy” at the noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, March 20 at The Steamboat Grand.

Dr. Vandenburgh will speak about experiments he and his team performed on NASA’s space shuttle to study skeletal muscle wasting in the microgravity of outer space, which led to new treatment methods for earth-based diseases. These studies led to new methods for developing treatments for earth-based diseases such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a fatal disease affecting one in every 3,300 male births.

Documentary highlights activist Dolores Huerta on Thursday

Bud Werner Memorial Library’s Indie Lens Pop-Up season continues with a free screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary “Dolores,” about activist Dolores Huerta, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22 in Library Hall. An equal partner in founding the first farm workers union with César Chávez, Huerta tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice, evolving into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century. She continues the fight to this day at age 87.

Filmmaker Peter Bratt had unprecedented access to this intensely private mother of 11. “Dolores” chronicles Huerta’s life from her childhood in Stockton to her early years with the United Farm Workers from her work with the headline-making grape boycott launched in 1965 to her role in the feminist movement of the 1970s to her continued work as a fearless activist. Featuring interviews with Gloria Steinem, Luis Valdez, Hillary Clinton, Angela Davis, her children and more, “Dolores” is an intimate and inspiring portrait of a passionate champion of the oppressed and an indomitable woman willing to accept the personal sacrifices involved in committing one’s life to social change.
