May permit valuation surpasses that of 2007

— The valuation of May 2008 building permits in Steamboat Springs leapt ahead of May 2007 on the strength of the $128 million valuation of One Steamboat Place condominium and commercial development at the base of the ski area. But that wasn’t the entire story.

Building Department official Carl Dunham said six duplex units and three triplex units added $5.1 million to last month’s total of $130.29 million in valuation.

A year ago at the end of May, the total valuation of permits issued was $38.2 million.

Of the duplex and triplex units, all but two duplexes represent the final phase of the Stonewood project on Eagleridge Drive.

South in Stagecoach, there have been three building permits issued for new single-family homes and three permits for alterations and additions issued since the first of the year, Dunham said.

Seven permits for single-family homes with an aggregate valuation of $2.49 million were issued in rural Routt County in May. The county has seen permits valued at $27.16 million issued year to date. That compares to $25.58 million through May in 2007.

Old Town Steamboat house up for grabs

Developer Charlie Sher says he wants to give away a home in Old Town Steamboat Springs. The only catch is that the recipient must be willing to move it. Sher said that for the right nonprofit, he would be willing to toss in some cash to defer moving expenses.

Sher says he would like to avoid demolishing the home.
