Obituary: Victor (Ted) Theodore Serafy
November 9, 1962 – September 19, 2024
The Steamboat community mourns the loss of a special soul with the passing of Ted Serafy on September 19.
Born November 9, 1962, Ted grew up in Georgia and attended Auburn University studying English Literature. An unsuspecting grammar snob due to his education, Ted spoke with conviction and always used proper grammar in all communications.
Ted honed his carpentry and construction skills during his summers in college and then made his way to Steamboat Springs. He worked at Perry Mansfield Camp for nearly 10 years and during this time, he also began working at Steamboat Ski Resort. With almost 40 years at the ski area, Ted built amazing connections with people from lift operators and engineers to state inspectors, officials in the building and planning department, outside contractors and employees in every department at the resort. He was well known for his friendship and knack for creating camaraderie. Ted would come up with nicknames for coworkers, and when he gave one it was an honor, as it meant he really liked you.
An incredibly talented, creative and disciplined perfectionist, Ted put his whole heart into everything he touched. He always had a hands-on approach to his work, and enthusiastically shared his wisdom, knowledge and expertise with others. He was consistently designing, constructing and implementing new, innovative projects and approaches to improve operations at the resort that ultimately enhanced the guest experience. Ted was able to solve almost any problem and always a part of the solution, as he often guided engineers to the proper ways to complete a project. Ted was highly respected in his field and was recognized with numerous safety awards throughout the years, as well as the Rocky Mountain Lift Association Lift Person of the Year award in 2013.
In 1998 Ted met the love of his life, Liz Langley, at the infamous Inferno bar while she was visiting on a ski trip from the Dallas Texas area. This chance meeting ultimately led to their life-long commitment and they married on March 11, 2001. Ted put his construction and maintenance expertise to work and built their perfect home in Silver Spur where they have happily lived since 2005.
Ted and Liz loved spending their free time together. As avid golfers, they could often be found at The Steamboat Golf Club where they have been longtime members. Ted was also a motorcycle enthusiast and he and Liz enjoyed many road trips together.
Ted is survived by his wife Liz, father Victor and 2 brothers Scott and Grant Serafy. He was proceeded in death by his mother, Jan who passed away in 2017.
