Sean Hunter, 54, passed away on February 14, 2025, at his home in Hayden, Colorado.

Sean was born on February 3, 1971, in Westminster, California and grew up in Garden Grove, California. He built a life marked by hard work, generosity, and a love for the outdoors. He dedicated his career to construction, and later in life slowed down a bit and went into cabinet design and sales, and lumber sales—fields where his craftsmanship and expertise left a lasting impact around the Yampa Valley.

Beyond his professional life, Sean found joy in nature. He was an avid fisherman who cherished time spent on the water whether it was a lake, river, or ocean. His happy place was being in his drift boat, floating and fishing the Yampa River with family and friends. A side-by-side purchase the summer before last turned into another love that he enjoyed with his wife Holly and friends. His willingness to lend a hand whenever needed was a defining trait that touched many lives. His witty and sarcastic sense of humor was not always gotten by all, but those who knew, knew, and he was still joking around right up to his final days. To know him was to love him and he will be missed terribly.

Sean met the love of his life, Holly, in 1989 when he was just 18 years old. They parted ways for a few years when he decided to move to Guam to enjoy a newfound hobby, scuba diving. Always keeping in touch with each other they reconnected a few years later when he came home for Christmas. Holly followed him back to Guam where they lived together for a year before getting married in July 1997 in Agana, Guam and started a family. They eventually settled in Hayden, Colorado in 1998.

Sean is survived by his wife, Holly Hunter; his sons, Jack Hunter and Patrick Hunter; his half-brothers Dewey Altizer and Vincent Altizer; his half-sister Leah Altizer; his step-sister Kitty Hunter; his mother-in-law, Doreen McIntyre; several cousins, sisters, and brothers-in-laws and nieces and nephews; and numerous friends that were also considered family. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Underwood; his mother, Ursula Hunter; his stepfather, Patrick Hunter; and father-in-law, Edwin McIntyre.

Please consider a donation in Sean’s memory to the Jan Bishop Cancer Center, Steamboat Springs, whose loving team took great care of him throughout his cancer journey, or to Northwest Colorado Health Hospice, who gave him, and his family, great comfort in his final week with us. A celebration of life will be held at a later date yet to be determined as well as a float down the Yampa River to spread his ashes. Sean was an amazing husband, father, and friend and his loss will leave a hole that will never be filled. May Sean’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and loved him.
