Obituary: Matthew Johnson
July 18, 1982 – November 11, 2024
Matthew Todd Johnson, born on July 18, 1982, passed away on November 11, 2024, after a long and resilient battle with mental health challenges. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service, survived by his devoted wife, Kelli, and their four wonderful children: Lucas, Eli, Kate, and Shiloh. Matt is also survived by his father, Charlie; his sister, Jenny; his brother, Stephen and his wife, Beth; and many other dear family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Teresa; his maternal grandparents, Madeleine and Nolan; and his paternal grandfather, Charles E. Johnson Sr.
Matt was born and raised in Lexington, Missouri, to Charlie and Teresa Johnson. His Missouri roots remained close to his heart as he built his life there, completing pharmacy school at UMKC. It was there that he met and fell in love with Kelli. The two married in 2006 and embarked on a shared journey in healthcare. In 2012, they moved to Steamboat Springs to continue their careers as pharmacists and grow their family. In 2019, Matt and Kelli took a bold step and purchased Lyons Corner Drug, where they dedicated themselves to supporting the health and well-being of their community. Through his compassionate care and dedication, Matt touched countless lives, providing comfort and steadfast support to families and individuals throughout Steamboat Springs.
An Eagle Scout, Matt lived by the Scout Oath and the 12 parts of the Scout Law in both his business and personal life. He remained an active member of the local Boy Scouts, passionately committed to guiding and mentoring young men in the community. In 2021, he was recognized as part of the 20 Under 40 award and was honored with the Entrepreneur Award during his career, showcasing his dedication and achievements.
Matt was known for his endless repertoire of bad dad jokes and a love for practical jokes that kept everyone on their toes. If you were brave enough to adventure out to his home, you were guaranteed the full “mountain man” experience, complete with life lessons, hearty laughs, and an invitation to embrace the beauty and challenges of outdoor living.
Beyond his professional life, Matt found peace and joy on his property, caring for numerous farm animals and embracing the simple beauty of the outdoors. He cherished time with his family, whether rebuilding cars in the garage or embarking on road trips in their camper van. Matt’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support Kelli, Lucas, Eli, Kate, and Shiloh. Contributions can be sent to Yampa Valley Bank or through their GoFundMe page. Additionally, donations in Matt’s memory may be made to REPS (Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide) to further efforts in mental health awareness and support.
The family invites you to a memorial service on Friday, December 6th, at 4:30 PM at Steamboat Christian Center. For those unable to attend in person, the service will also be available via live stream.
