Obituary: Lawrence “Larry” Cook

Lawrence “Larry” Cook passed away on Feb. 28th, 2025 at The Memorial Hospital in Craig, CO. Larry was born in Winfield, KS on Feb. 1, 1930 to Erma and Elmer Cook. Larry graduated from High School in Portland, Tennessee. In his senior year, his Father passed away suddenly. Larry moved with his Mother and 2 Sisters back to Kansas, where he enrolled and graduated from Emporia State University.

After graduating with a degree in Business, Larry enlisted in Army Counterintelligence, and was deployed to Japan. He was Honorably Discharged in 1955 with the rank of Sergeant. When he returned to Kansas, he married his College Sweetheart, Patricia Iverson, on Aug. 12, 1955. Larry had 2 Children, Kristi and Scott.

Larry went to work for General Motors and was transferred around Kansas and Colorado, until 1963 when he moved to Craig, and became a Partner in Reid Chevrolet, with Floyd Reid. In 1968 Larry bought Floyd out. In 1979, his Son Scott got involved in the Dealership. Cook Chevrolet and Subaru expanded into Steamboat Springs in 2001. Larry was always proud that he took care of all his “people”, Family, Employees, and Customers. He was also proud to support the Non Profits and Charities in the Yampa Valley.

Larry will be terribly missed by his Surviving Family members, Sister Norma Jean Cook-Corder of Sarasota, FL and 6 Nieces and Nephews, Daughter Kristi Kleban of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Son Scott Cook, and Daughter in Law Kelly of Craig, CO; grandchildren, Brent and Brad of Craig, CO, Shawna Kleban (Husband Jason) of Lake Wylie, SC, and Ryan Kleban of Lake Wylie, SC, Britney Papinchak ( Husband Nick) and Children Tripp, Caroline, and Johnny of Omaha, NE.

Larry was preceded in death by his Wife of 62 years, Pat Cook, Parents Erma and Elmer Cook, Sister Elaine Calvert, Sister in Law Carolyn Iverson – Schindel; Brothers in Law Bud Calvert, Chuck Corder, Larry Fogerty, Darrell Iverson, and Gene Schindel; Son in Law Michael Kleban, and Nephew Craig Calvert.

Details regarding Services will be announced as they become available. Memorial Donations will benefit The Memorial Hospital of Craig, and will be managed by Grant’s Mortuary ( 621 Yampa Ave Craig, CO 81625). Donations can also be made directly to the Memorial Regional Health Foundation, “In memory of Larry Cook.”
