Greg passed away May 3rd, 2025 doing what he loved – fishing the beautiful waters of Steamboat Lake.
Greg was born on July 2, 1952 in Houghton MI to Robert and Genevieve Bjorgum, who soon made their way to his childhood home of Faribault, MN. It was in those lakes, woods and ski slopes of Southern MN that Greg found his lifelong passion for the outdoors. After the ski bug really hit, he joined the local ski club where he soon became an instructor. Among his students, and a fortuitous chairlift ride, Greg met the love of his life, Leslie Dusbabek, and they’ve been hitting the slopes and sharing life together for 47 years.
Greg graduated from the Faribault High School Class of 1970, and then, after a stint at Alta ski area, from the University of Oregon in 1976. From there, the mountains of CO were calling and Greg and Leslie moved to Ft. Collins.
In Ft. Collins, they started looking for a small business to buy, and were lucky enough to find State Beauty Supply, a wholesale supplier to salons and stylists. They purchased it in 1982, and Greg worked there, leaving a legacy of business integrity and respect for his staff and customers until he retired in 2018. In 2005, the opportunity to open a State Beauty Supply in Steamboat arose – it only took a second to decide to move to this beautiful place where his family called home the last 20 years.
In retirement, Greg fished at every possible opportunity, keeping a running total of all the fish he caught. He was up to 800 since ice fishing started last November, always releasing them to catch again.
Greg’s greatest joy in life was raising his 3 sons into becoming the wonderful young men they are now. Life in the Bjorgum household was full of non-stop activity, and he cherished every ski trip, hunting venture, fishing outing and Special Olympics tournament he did with each.
Greg is survived by his wife Leslie; sons, Scott, Andrew and Brett; grandson Logan, all of Steamboat Springs; honorary granddaughter Maci Silvers of Wiggins and brother Bruce (Jennifer) of Rochester, MN.
Greg was a man who lived his life with character and giving values – from being the guy in the neighborhood who always finds a way to be helpful, to volunteering with school, church and Special Olympics, from being a friend who’s there when you need him, and being a loving husband, father and grandfather. His warm and kind spirit will be greatly missed.
Memorial Services will be held at the Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church Saturday May 17th at Noon with a reception to follow.
Contributions can be made to Special Olympics Colorado, in honor of our many Steamboat athletes.
