Obituary: Alex Estes

Alex passed away October 3 rd , 2024, at the age of 80, In Puerto Vallarta Mexico. He was born, raised and schooled (at the University of Missouri) in Columbia Missouri. After college and a stint in the National Guard, Alex traveled the world and worked fighting fires in Canada and worked on the Alaska Pipeline before moving to the Evergreen, Colorado area.
In 1974 Alex moved to Steamboat Springs, built a duplex under the gondola and a sporting goods store where the current Steamboat Shoe Market is located. Alex was always available to banter and joke with folks next to his potbellied stove in the Red Wing Shoe Store.
While in Steamboat, Alex was introduced to white water rafting on the Green and Yampa Rivers and ended up floating most of the rivers in the west including over a dozen trips down the Grand Canyon.
He sold his Steamboat business and other properties in the early 1990s and moved to the banks of the Selway River in Idaho. In Idaho, Alex volunteered as an EMT and as a firefighter along with running another business.
He had met a couple from Guatemala in his sporting goods store in Steamboat and traveled there yearly to volunteer with medical personnel in treating widows and orphans of the conflict between the government and the Mayan people.
Alex had a remarkable life with a great family, friends from around the world, travels to exotic and beautiful places, and the ability to share his energies to help others.
A celebration of life will be held 11-16-2024 in Columbia Missouri. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
