Claus James Hume

The Honorable Judge Claus James Hume (retired) 81, of Westminster, Colorado passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2016. Claus was born in Burlington, Colorado on September 26, 1935 to Alfred L. Hume and Mildred Maye Rose. That union ended in divorce. Mildred remarried Lawrence Blodgett. Claus graduated from Stratton High School in 1953, entering the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado the fall of that year. Claus graduated from the University of Colorado in 1958, achieving a Bachelor of Arts, with a Major in English Literature and a Minor in Philosophy. After graduating, Claus worked as a photographic technician from 1958 – 1961 at the Sacramento Peak National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico. Claus served his country as an Officer in the United States Navy (reserve) from 1954 until he was Honorably Discharge in 1962.
Claus married Jane Ann Hayden in 1959, divorcing in 1982. Claus returned to the University of Colorado (Boulder) Law School in 1962, graduating in 1965 with a L.L.B. Degree of Law. Claus was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1965, moving from Boulder to Craig, Colorado where he started his family and began his legal career. Claus’s distinguished legal career spanned more than four decades. Claus worked as a General Practice Lawyer from 1965 to 1972. He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Colorado’s Fourteenth Judicial District from 1966 to 1971. In 1972 he was elected to the office of District Attorney for the Fourteenth Judicial District, serving in that capacity until his appointment to his first Judgeship as a District Judge for the Fourteenth Judicial District. In 1978 Claus was appointed Chief Judge for the Fourteenth Judicial District and Chief Judge of Colorado’s Water Division 6.
Claus remarried in 1987 to Julia Warnick. The two would spend the next 29 years together. In January 1988 Claus was appointed to the Colorado Court of Appeals in Denver, Colorado. One short month later, in February of 1988 he was appointed as Chief Judge of that very same court. A position he held until his retirement in April of 2003. Never one to sit back and let the grass grow under his feet, Claus served as a Senior Judge for the State of Colorado from 2003 to 2005. Claus was an exemplary servant to his family, community and the State of Colorado.
Claus is survived by his wife Julia Hume and their two children Christopher (Kenlyn) Newman and Sonia McBride. His former wife, Jane Hume and their two children, KC (Errica) Hume and Mikala (Don) Wood, and 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren from the blended family. He is also survived by his brothers Ralph (Cathie) Blodgett, Larry Blodgett, Vern Hume and his sister June (Jerry) Guy.
