Elberta Kofford was born one of four children to Carl and Lucille (Fullmer) Kofford on April 13, 1927, in Oregon. She spent her childhood in LaGrande, Oregon and attended a school for the deaf in Salem.
In the early 1970's, Elberta married Theodore Cochran, her childhood friend. Throughout their marriage, Ted and Elberta could be seen walking down the street hand in hand, joyful in their love of one another.
A stranger to none, Elberta was known for her infectious smile and loved to extend a warm hug. Elberta loved writing poetry and photographing the beautiful nature around her. She enjoyed teaching people sign language and acclimating hearing people to the culture of the hearing impaired. Together with her husband, Elberta was an avid member of local bowling leagues. She found employment at The Memorial Hospital as a dietician. Above all, Elberta was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family and close friends.
Elberta is survived by her three daughters: Brenda Kofford (Jeffrey Hummel) of Ft. Collins, CO, Mary Demple (Gerard) of Broomfield, CO and Shirley Diem (Tony) of Cross Plains, Indiana. Elberta is further survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Elberta was preceded in death by three children: Donna Broyles, Christopher Broyles and Lawrence Anderson; one brother and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Elberta's memory to the Center for Hearing & Communication, 50 Broadway, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
