Barbara Elisabeth DeVries
June 15, 2013
Barbara Elisabeth DeVries (nee Ferris) was born to Daniel and Dorothy Ferris on Feb. 2, 1931, in Peoria, Ill. Mr. Ferris was a troubleshooter for the Toledo Scale Co., and as a result, Barbara moved many times, finally graduating from high school in Lakewood. She had an older brother, Daniel, who was a combat veteran of WWII.
She met Robert G. DeVries in her freshman year at Colorado State University in September 1949. They were married in September 1950. The family moved many times, finally settling in Steamboat Springs in August 1968. Bob and Barbara had three sons, Steven, Bruce and Scott. The boys graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1970, 1972 and 1976, respectively.
Barbara was the Sexton of the United Methodist Church for many years and a member of the church choir. Volunteering was an important part of Barbara's life. She served on the missions board and was a charter member of the original Hospice Group and LIFT-UP of Routt County. Barb was a very active member of the League of Women Voters, where she served on the local board as well as the state board. Barbara and Bob hosted a number of foreign exchange students and chaperones through the years, resulting in life-long friendships. As a result, Barb and Bob visited Europe 12 times, seeing the great sights and reconnecting with friends.
An avid swimmer Barbara got up early and made it to the hot springs pool at 5:30 a.m. She swam seven days per week until that opening time was reduced to five days a week. She only missed her morning swim when the temperature dropped lower than 10 below.
Barbara will be remembered for her many contributions to the Steamboat Springs community, her devotion to family and friends and the joy she brought to others. A celebration of her life will be held this summer.
The family requests no flowers or contributions and appreciates the care given to Barbara by the staff at Yampa Valley Medical Center, the Doak Walker Care Center and the hospice staff of Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association.
