Jim Hidy

Former Steamboat Springs resident Jim Hidy died June 2, 2013, at his home in Black Forest after a brief illness. Jim’s family had moved in 1940 to Steamboat, where his father opened his business of H.L. Hidy Plumbing & Heating. Hence, Jim learned the plumbing trade and majored in outdoor education through his high school years, graduating from the old Steamboat Springs High School in 1950. He and friend Jay McFarland had the first two small jeeps in the Steamboat area. They loved to four-wheel drive and broke many trails that still are in use in the Hahn’s Peak/Farwell Mountain area. Jim and his wife, Bonnie, served as campground hosts for the Routt-Medicine Bow National Forests, mainly hosting at the Seedhouse Campground. They were instrumental in doing the paperwork to secure the four-seater log outhouse, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a place on the Routt County Register of Historic Properties. They also were camp hosts for the Colorado State Parks, serving at Pearl Lake and Steamboat Lake campgrounds. Jim’s vast knowledge of the area and his plumbing expertise were put to good use while being a camp host. The Hidys were good friends with Willa Wiggins, from Hahn’s Peak Village, and Janice Jewell Kay, of Columbine. They all watched for the first blooms of the many wild flowers, gathered six kinds of mushrooms, picked chokecherries, wild raspberries, currants and service berries and then made jelly and fished for brookies.
A memorial service will be held for Jim at 11 a.m. June 11, 2013, at the Black Forest Lutheran Church. Memorial gifts may be made to the church at 12455 Black Forest Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.
