Oak Creek awarded grant for water system plan

Michael Schrantz

— Oak Creek has to find another way to fund its project to install water meters across town after being denied grant funding, but the town recently was awarded a grant to tackle the engineering and phasing for its water system project.

The town was awarded $232,500 from the Department of Local Affairs to look at how to replace its aging water system.

Most of the pipes in the system are 60 to 70 years old, Town Administrator Mary Alice Page-Allen said, and some are only 3 feet below ground despite the frost depth for the area being 6 to 7 feet.

There’s 35,000 linear feet of waterline throughout the town, she said.

The town still needs to complete an environmental review before the grant can be finalized.

The engineering and phasing also will overlap somewhat with the town’s recent push to create a capital improvements plan.

If the road is being torn up, Page-Allen said, it’s worth looking at what else might be able to be accomplished.

The engineering firm Civil Design Consultants Inc. recently was selected to work on the capital improvements and water system plans.

No construction dollars are included in this grant, Page-Allen said, but by the end of this process, at least one or more phases should be ready to go to bid.

“Once we finish this stage of the project, we will be working with our engineering firm and the Department of Local Affairs to identify various funding sources,” she said about money for construction.
