The first weekend of 2025 saw great success for Northwest Colorado wrestlers:

Moffat County conquers Kremmling

After picking up wins both individually and as a group in December, Moffat County girls wrestling continued with a tone of victory into the new year.

MCHS won the West Grand Invitational Saturday in Kremmling, with all Bulldog athletes gaining placement on the podium.

Junior Kayla Deaton took the highest placement with a win in the 125-pound class, going undefeated with four falls and a win by medical forfeit, picking up several weeks after a championship at last month’s Warrior Classic.

MCHS — a team composed of Craig, Hayden and Steamboat Springs students — picked up several silver honors, with Steamboat’s Amanaki George (140), Niyla Ennis (170), Hadyen’s Emily Hockaday (190) and Kearra Cicchini (235) each finishing as the runner-up in their category.

The smaller tournament meant smaller brackets, which meant many of the squad’s matches were against each other, with Bulldog athletes holding nothing back against their own teammates.

Sydney Brazeal (105), Ryleigh Hedman (125) and Hayden’s Sydney Preston (130) each placed third, while Abi Clay (100), Mackenzie Moore (105), Miriam Jimenez (130), HayLee Staker (140), Vanessa Herrera (145), and Callah Caperton (170) each took fourth.

Routt rocks Rangely

While the girls were taking on West Grand, Routt County teams took on the Rangely Invite, with Hayden boys finishing as Saturday’s runner-up.

The Tigers were high on the point count thanks to undefeated runs on the day by Israel Perez (106), Joe Harris (175) and JD Case (190), as each of them won their weight classes.

Hayden’s Danek DeMorat (132), Jarrett Davis (138), Triston Day (144), Ethan Silva (150) and John Bene (157) each placed second, while Carson Campbell (144) took fourth and Elier Mendoza (132) sixth.

With a smaller roster at Rangely, Soroco placed seventh in the team standings as Cavit Gregory earned the bronze for the 132 class, with Arthur Redmond (126) and Tim Beddell (157) each gaining fourth.

Moffat County, Hayden, Soroco and Steamboat wrestling teams will all head to Vernal, Utah this weekend for the multi-state Tournament of Champions.
