Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association: Haven offers homelike option for seniors
Many seniors are at a stage in life where they do not require skilled nursing care, but they no longer can, or want, to live alone. Haven Assisted Living is a 20-bed nonprofit assisted living facility for those ages 55 and older with state-of-the-art amenities, including a beautiful homelike setting, highly qualified staff, three meals per day, housekeeping, assistance with daily living tasks as needed, companionship, social activities, exercise classes, private or semi-private rooms, freedom to come and go with no worry and individual pampering. Medication administration assistance and medical appointment transportation also are available.
What is assisted living?
Assisted living often is viewed as the best of both worlds. Residents have as much independence as they want with the knowledge that personal care and support services are available if they need them.
Assisted living is designed to provide residents with assistance with basic ADLs (activities of daily living) such as bathing, grooming, dressing and more.
Assisted living communities differ from nursing homes in that they don’t offer complex medical services.
Who needs assisted living?
Assisted living residents usually are seniors who have had a slight decline in health in some way and need assistance performing one or more ADLs.
Seniors who would like to live in a social environment with few responsibilities and a place where care is easily accessible whenever the senior may need it are the type of seniors you will find in an assisted living community.
Respite care gives assistance while the caregiver/families are away on vacation or business or while families enjoy the Yampa Valley worry-free while on vacation.
The Vivien Card Memorial Respite Room is a fully furnished room with linens. All the regular benefits of the Haven are included: three meals per day, housekeeping, assistance with bathing if needed, activities and companionship.
Medication administration assistance and medical appointment transportation are available for a fee. All prerequisites apply just as they do for full-time Haven residents; however, the 55 or older age restriction does not apply to the respite room.
Annual fundraiser Friday
The Haven annual fundraiser barbecue and silent auction will be held Friday at the Haven Community Center.
The barbecue and dance, which starts at 6 p.m., is a family-friendly event that includes activities for kids, live music and dancing with Loose Change starting at 7 p.m., a homemade barbecue supper, beer garden and a fabulous silent auction.
Tickets are $8 per student, $15 per adult, $25 per couple and $40 per family, and kids 5 and younger are free. Sponsorship opportunities also are available starting at $100.
New to this year’s fundraiser is online bidding at http://www.havenseniorliving.com/bid for a one or two person, full-day guided fly-fishing expedition from Henderson Fly Fishing on 1 mile of private river access near Hayden donated by Kathy Hockin.
Your guide will be Steve Henderson on this private river section of the Yampa River. The river access is fishable from mid-June through March, which gives the winning bidder nearly four seasons of fishing to choose from.
The item is valued at $625 and was donated by Henderson Fly Fishing.
Online bids will be taken until 3 p.m. Wednesday. Bidding will continue in person at the event Friday until 8 p.m.
A silent auction full of unique wellness and outdoor activity items will be held the night of the event:
• One-day guided fishing trip for one or two people on private river access guided by Steve Henderson
• 18 holes of golf for two with two carts at Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig

Proceeds from the event directly will benefit community seniors, with funding from this annual event being designated for essential facility maintenance and repairs.
In the past three years, this event has raised funds for a number of needed restoration projects. These projects included an overhaul of the fire sprinkler system, essential roof repairs, electrical system updates, heating system repairs, and new carpet for resident rooms.
The renovations intended with proceeds from this year’s event include replacing additional resident room carpet, upgrading the recovery system for hot water production and a new section of roof repairs. The event fundraising goal is $15,000 this year.
