North Routt Fire Protection District awarded $175,000 grant

— The North Routt Fire Protection District learned last week it was awarded a $175,000 grant from energy impact funds distributed by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.

The funds will be used to purchase a new piece of firefighting apparatus, which will cost about $350,000. Fire Chief Mike Swinsick said the fire district will contribute the other $175,000 toward the cost of the new truck.

“Without a grant like this, we are not able to fund replacing an entire truck like this on our own,” Swinsick said.

The department will take delivery of the new truck in about a year, and it will allow them to retire two trucks that were built in the 1970s.

Chief’s vehicle involved in accident

A North Routt Fire Protection District vehicle was totaled Wednesday after being involved in an accident.

North Routt Fire Protection District Chief Mike Swinsick said he was driving the fire chief’s 2006 Ford Expedition north up Willow Creek Pass near mile marker 19 on Routt County Road 129 when his car was hit by a Dodge pickup.

Swinsick said the woman driving the Dodge lost control and started fishtailing down the pass. He tried to avoid the collision by driving into a snowbank, but the driver’s side of his truck was hit.

The roads were very slick Wednesday morning when the crash occurred.
