North Routt Community Charter School board of directors: Promote the success of schools

The North Routt Community Charter School is a publicly funded school authorized by the Steamboat Springs School District. We proudly serve over 90 students each year in our wonderful North Routt community. We bus students from Steamboat Springs to Clark daily.

Our school, built with a state BEST grant in 2011, does not have immediate capital renewal needs, but we know the district does. Given reduced funding to school districts within the state over the last decade, we understand how ongoing maintenance and upgrades can often be deferred for way too long to meet more pressing student needs. The district is asking voters to pass a 7-year, $12.9 million bond, and we applaud their efforts.

They are also asking that voters approve a $1 million ongoing mill levy to provide a permanent source of capital construction funding allowing the district to promptly address future maintenance projects. Thankfully, our school would receive a pro-rata portion of that mill levy because we know first-hand of its importance. Our LEED certified building has complex water, HVAC and sewage systems and the effort to maintain those systems has been significant. With another source of predictable income, we will be able to avoid deferred maintenance issues.

Lastly, as has been recently publicized, the need to increase internet bandwidth in North Routt is critical — and it’s the key to delivering on our promise of providing students a 21st century learning environment. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to provide more than consumer-level bandwidth to our school. Approval of the mill levy will enable us to improve in this area.

Yes, it takes more than state funding to run a school. It takes the whole community to support our schools. Vote “yes” on 3C/3D and promote the future success of our schools.
