Nordic skiers finish strong at Junior Nationals

— Lars Hannah couldn’t match his best performance at the 2015 USSA Cross Country Junior National Championships, but he did build on what was a great week of competition, helping lead the way for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club team.

Racing in a 15-kilometer mass start classic skiing race, Hannah finished sixth, 51 seconds out of first place.

Evan Weiman, a former Winter Sports Club skier, was 44th.

In the women’s U18 10K classic race, Kathleen O’Connell led the way for a strong pack of local skiers. She was 11th. Jordi Floyd was right on her ski tips, in 12th, and Anna Burkholder was 19th.

Wyatt Gebhardt bounced back after getting caught in an early race traffic jam to finish seventh in the U16 boys 5K race, just 22 seconds back. Noel Keeffe was 10th in that race, Tyler Terranova 19th and Jimmy Colfer 31st.

Simon Zink was 25th, Finn O’Connell 58th and Evan Barbier 62nd in the men’s U18 race.

Kathleen O’Connell earned a silver medal on the final day of racing, joining with Hailey Swirbul of Aspen and Taeler McCrerey of Summit to place second in the women’s U18 relay race.

Keeffe and Gebhardt, in the U16 boys race, raced with Vail skier Nolan Herzog to place third.
