Nordic combined team strong in relay

— The U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team capped the 2014 portion of its World Cup schedule with an up-and-down weekend in Ramsau, Austria.

The team was slowed by results from a provisional jumping round. Three of the team’s four skiers — Bryan Fletcher, Taylor Fletcher and Adam Loomis — landed outside of the top 50 in the round, preventing them from racing in Sunday’s individual race.

Billy Demong did race there, his first individual action of the season. After his jump left him in 49th place, he skied into 32nd, gaining 17 spots.

The good news for the team came Saturday in a strong team competition.

The United States squad, competing with all four members, placed fifth.

The team jumped into eighth place, then put down strong skiing times to climb and finish well. All four skiers laid down strong results. Bryan Fletcher had the fifth-fastest time in his leg, Loomis the third, Taylor Fletcher the best and Billy Demong, the anchor, the seventh.
