Nordic combined team faces season finale

Joel Reichenberger

— The U.S. Nordic combined ski team is set for its last hurrah of the season, two Norwegian World Cup events that will wrap up the 2014-15 campaign this week.

The team will compete Thursday in Trondeim, and Saturday in Oslo.

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Americans, one that’s mixed a World Cup podium and regular top-10 performances with lackluster results in other races. Results from last weekend’s World Cup stop in Lahti, Finland, fell somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

With Bryan Fletcher sitting out nursing a cold to prepare for the Norway comps, Taylor Fletcher was the only U.S. skier to qualify in the provisional jumping round for Friday’s individual competition.

He went on to place 26th, skiing up from 35th place to finish 1 minute, 58.1 seconds behind the day’s winner, Japanese skier Akito Watabe.

The team struggled a day later in a two-man relay event.

Fletcher teamed with Jasper Good, an 18-year old Steamboater getting his first World Cup start, and they finished 16th. Another U.S. team composed of Ben Berend and Adam Loomis, both World Cup rookies this season themselves, placed 17th, rounding out the field.
