— The last three months have been busy and stressful, Dave Jarrett explained.

As the head coach of the U.S. Nordic combined Team, he’s sweated out decisions regarding his own salary, and is currently trying to cobble together enough money to pay for an assistant coach and the technicians the team relies upon overseas.

Things that are usually at the top of his list in the summer, like training camps and European competitions, have taken a backseat.

“We’re looking at a future that’s going to require perpetual fundraising and marketing,” he said on Monday from Park City, fresh from a weekend coaching his team in ski jumping and roller skiing at Steamboat Springs’ annual Fourth of July festivities. “I’ve spent quite a bit of time doing that, for sure, and that’s just aded more work to the coaching side of things.”

It’s taken plenty of work and too much worry, but the immediate future is beginning to come into focus for Jarrett and the team, all still reeling from the April news that the majority of Nordic combined funding was being cut by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association.

One of the most significant developments is Nordic combined’s partnership with USA Ski Jumping. The two group have merged, Nordic combined finding a like soul in a sport that itself was kicked from the U.S. Ski Team nearly a decade ago.

“We’re combining with those guys and hopefully in the future we’ll be 100 percent seamless with the same kind of marketing and sponsors,” Jarrett said. “At first we’ll kind of be somewhat separate in our fundraising and our spending with the goal to be one system, one organization moving forward.”

Other changes popped up in Steamboat, too, Friday when the new-look organization announced a dozen skiers — most with Steamboat ties of at least some sort — had made it on one of three teams.

The A-Team will feature the three Olympians still in the sport, 2010 gold medalist Billy Demong, two-time Olympian Taylor Fletcher and 2014 Olympian Bryan Fletcher.

The B-Team features four skiers who all scored Continental Cup points last year, Adam Loomis, Brett Denney, Michael Ward and Ben Berend. The C-Team, meanwhile, features five athletes, Ben Loomis, Erik Lynch, Aleck Gantick, Jasper Good and Nicholas Madden.

Being on the team won’t mean what it used to, however. B-Team and C-Team athletes will likely be on the hook for expenses getting to and from most of their competitions in the coming winter.

The official deadline with USSA comes at the end of the month, but Jarrett said his salary has been guaranteed by that organization for another year. The same isn’t true for the rest of the staff, however, and much of the focus is now on piecing together the money to keep assistant coach Greg Poirier.

“We are working our damnedest to raise money to secure all of our staff, coaches and service guys,” Jarrett said. “The next piece of the puzzle, once that’s done, we start raising money for camps and comps. We didn’t think it made sense to do that until there was the infrastructure to support that.”
