No. 2 Ignacio makes quick work of Hayden boys basketball

Ben Ingersoll

— Arguably the toughest stretch of games the Hayden High School boys basketball team will face this year is now behind the Tigers, and they definitely took a few more hits Saturday against Ignacio.

Ignacio — the preseason Class 2A No. 2-ranked team — downed Hayden big, 91-20, dropping the Tigers to 0-3 after the Mountain Top Classic.

“They shot really well again,” Hayden coach Jody Harvey said. “We played hard and just didn’t have much gas left in the tank.”

Senior Jack Redmond didn’t play, sitting out with an illness. Fellow senior Carlos Valdez had nine points and was named to the all-tournament team. Freshman Keyen Camilletti had six points.

“We were more shorthanded than we usually are,” Harvey said. “We played OK and did some good things in the second half.”

Harvey said some timidness he saw in his group in Thursday’s season opener faded away as the Tigers played into the weekend, but some powerhouse squads got the better of Hayden’s young and inexperienced group.

Hayden will head to the Meeker Shoot Out on Thursday and will open with the host at 7:30 p.m.
