Nikki Knoebel: Withdrawing from county treasurer’s race

Recently, I became aware of information precluding me from participating in the Routt County treasurer’s race and the Oak Creek mayoral race at the same time. I received a legal opinion from the Colorado Secretary of State’s legal team advising that under C.R.S. 1-4-501(2), “No person is eligible to be a candidate for more than one office at one time, except that this subsection (2) does not apply to membership on different special district boards.”
Although an individual may hold two elected offices simultaneously; she, may not be a candidate for two offices at the same time. The timing of the separate April 3 Oak Creek mayor’s race and my announcement to run for the Routt County treasurer places me in a short window where I am not in compliance with C.R.S. 1-4-501(2).
Therefore, it is with great disappointment that I am withdrawing from the Routt County treasurer’s race. I filed my candidacy for the Oak Creek mayoral race in January, earlier than the Routt County treasurer’s race and did not realize at the time that this would be a conflict.
I have been honored to work with the Oak Creek community as mayor, and I have made an enthusiastic commitment to the citizens of Oak Creek to seek re-election as mayor and to work together to continue the progress we have made over the past eight years.
I appreciate all of the support that has been offered to me for both offices, and I look forward to continuing to serve the South Routt community as the town of Oak Creek’s mayor.
Thank you,
Nikki Knoebel
