Blues band King Johnson opens for Merl Saunders at Levelz, 1860 Ski Time Square Building E third floor 21 and older only. King Johnson released “Luck So Strange” a year ago with 13 New Orleans funk and jazz tracks. Hailing from Atlanta, the band receives its name from King (B.B., Albert and Freddie) and Johnson (Robert, Blind Willie and Tommy) influences. King Johnson is a mix of funk, jazz, soul and, of course, blues. Saunders, close friend of Jerry Garcia, Miles Davis and Harry Belafonte, plays an upbeat, soulful funk with reggae and jazz influences. Hot Buttered Rum String Band plays high-altitude bluegrass at The Wolf Den Tavern, 703 Lincoln Ave. downtown. After climbing, hiking, pickin’ and singin’ in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, HBRSB agreed they found a high-altitude bluegrass. HBRSB recently released “Three Point Two” because of their experiences in Colorado after two tours. “In these big Rocky Mountains where there’s so much to do, it’s hard to get drunk on 3.2. If it’s UC Boulder or BYU, it’s hard to get drunk on 3.2.” HBRSB is Zachary Matthews on mandolin and vocals, Erik Yates on woodwinds, accordion and vocals, Nat Keefe on guitar and vocals and Bryan Horne on double bass and vocals.
