Community foundation

to give extra $25,000

The Yampa Valley Community Foundation, which awards almost $400,000 to nonprofit organizations in Routt and Moffat counties each year, will celebrate its 25th anniversary by giving away an additional $25,000 this year.

Five $5,000 Sterling Anniversary Awards will be given to nonprofits that have made substantial impacts to improve the Yampa Valley. One award will be presented in each of five categories — arts and culture, education, environment, health and human services and recreation.

“We thought this would be our gift to the nonprofit community,” said Dianna Sutton, president and CEO of the Community Foundation.

Award winners will be chosen through a public nomination process. Nominees should be nonprofit, charitable organizations that epitomize the mission of YVCF: to honor tradition and maintain the character of the Yampa Valley.

To nominate an organization for a Sterling Anniversary Award, e-mail or drop a nomination off at the Steamboat Pilot & Today office at 1901 Curve Plaza. Entries for the recreation category must be received by Monday.

County asks that snow not be shoveled into streets

Routt County officials are asking residents not to plow their snow back into the county road rights of way.

Typically, when residents find the snow on their property is “stacked out,” some start pushing snow in their driveways back into already plowed roads, Routt County Road and Bridge Director Paul Draper said.

That has started happening, so county officials are asking that people stop, because pushing snow out costs the county time and money and also poses a safety hazard, Draper said. It is comparable to someone dragging a fallen tree from their property into the road for the county to clean up, Draper said.

“When you’re throwing stuff back into the road, you’re making a big mess in the road, and people are swerving around the snow you’ve pushed out there,” he said.

If snow doesn’t start melting, residents may need to have snow trucked off their property, he said.

Steamboat man, 20, arrested after traffic stop

A 20-year-old Steamboat Springs man was arrested Tuesday after 167 grams of marijuana were found in a routine traffic stop.

Benjamin Joseph Warren was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of 1 to 8 ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Steamboat Springs Police Department pulled over a vehicle Warren was riding in for expired registration tags, Assistant Police Chief Art Fiebing said.

The driver consented to a search, and the police found a bag where Warren had been sitting with 15 white envelopes holding 167 grams of marijuana, Fiebing said. Police also found a glass pipe with marijuana residue, he said.

The street value of the marijuana is between $500 and $750.
