The City of Steamboat Springs Utility Division has released new water and wastewater standard specifications that will apply to all new water and wastewater projects moving forward.

“It’s our intention to complete more frequent updates to accommodate an ever-changing world of design standards and construction techniques,” said Distribution and Collection Manager Michelle Carr.

The 2023 Standards Specification for Water & Wastewater became effective Jan. 1 for all water and wastewater projects located within the city utility-service area. These standards will not apply to projects within the Mt. Werner Water & Sanitation District service area.

The specifications establish minimum standards for the design, modification, abandonment and construction of water distribution and wastewater collection facilities within the city utility-service area.

As the city transitions from previous standards to the new updated standards, a few projects will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine the appropriate set of standards that will apply. In general, the new standards will not apply to projects with an active building or utility permit issued before Jan. 1 or a permit application submitted in CityView before Jan. 1.

“If you plan on performing water- or sewer-related work within the city’s utility district, please familiarize yourself with these specifications to ensure your project flows smoothly,” Carr said. “Of course, any project manager can reach out directly to the utility team if there are questions or clarification is needed.”

The city worked with Ulteig engineering services to develop the new water and wastewater standards.
