New Big Agnes tents feature light switches

— A new and innovative line of tents from Big Agnes is earning rave reviews from gear testers around the country.

All of the buzz is focused on the LED lights Big Agnes has added to its new mtnGLO series of tents.

“A tent with a built-in disco ball might get more buzz, but only just,” Backpacker Magazine editors recently wrote in their review of the tents from the Steamboat Springs-based company. “Play cards and kick back beneath mini LED lights that cast a glow throughout the tent — instead of a partner who keeps shining a headlamp in your eyes.”

Backpacker called the line of tents, “equal parts party, and practical.”

The magazine awarded the line of tents a 2015 Backpacker magazine Editors’ Choice Award.

The awards are given out after gear is tested by teams of experienced hikers and climbers.

In addition, the tents have earned gear awards from Outside , Gear Junkie and National Geographic.

Big Agnes President Bill Gamber recently told BusinessDen that Big Agnes had the lighting concept for about four or five years, and it took two years to develop.

Three AAA batteries power the LED bulbs in the tents.

Campers who want to charge their cell phones and other electronics in their tent can also purchase a $200 kit that serves as a rugged electronics case and battery pack.

The tent-lighting system itself can be purchased separately for $40.
