Multiple Routt County fire districts responded to a fully involved structure fire reported at a property located roughly 12 miles south of Hayden on Friday.

Flames and smoke were reported to be coming through the roof of a structure on the property around 11:50 a.m., according to emergency dispatch communications.

The West Routt Fire Protection District was the first to respond to the fire. No one was inside the home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries resulting from the incident but multiple dogs belonging to the property owners died, according to Trevor Guire, chief of the West Routt Fire Protection District.

Routt County Emergency Communications confirmed a multi-agency response to a fire on Routt County Road 37 at 12:18 p.m. on Friday. The response involved the Oak Creek Fire Protection District and the Steamboat Springs Fire Protection District. Both districts sent equipment and crews to the fire, according to dispatchers.

The Routt County Road and Bridge department also provided a water truck to assist with the response.

Standing in front of the smoldering debris Saturday morning, Guire noted that response times were lengthened due to wet and soft road conditions and said his “heart goes out to the family.”

“I have known three generations of them, four generations of them,” said Guire. “I am a firefighter at heart, this is the first time I have had to totally go defensive on a home. It’s not about me but it’s a defeating feeling.”

When Guire and his colleagues arrived at the scene Friday, he said, “we tucked our heads in the back door when the northern portion of the structure was still standing.”

“The roof had caved in between the log walls so getting in there, you weren’t going to get in there very far anyway and everything on the interior was gutted, you couldn’t really tell what anything was. You would spot a hot water heater or things, as far as seeing, you weren’t seeing furniture, you saw burned out bed frames, no mattresses,” said Guire.

To support the family, Mountain Valley Bank in Hayden has set up a dedicated account.

Individuals can donate to the account by visiting any Mountain Valley Bank location or sending a check to P.O. Box 279 in Hayden.

The property associated with the response is a 46-acre parcel in South Routt that includes the home destroyed by the fire. It was built in 1919 and remodeled in 1977, according to the Routt County Assessor’s Office website.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
