Mother’s Day in full bloom, 10 ways to celebrate in Steamboat
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS – Every Mother’s Day for as long as Holly Ann Bruns can remember, she and her father ventured out to the market in the early hours of the morning.
She insisted on handpicking each flower, refusing to have them arranged by anyone but herself, just for her mom.
“To me, there was no greater joy than creating something for the person I loved above all,” said Bruns, who owned the small business Hop Rabbit Flowers in Fort Collins in 2016 and brought it to Steamboat in April 2017.
“I would spend time holding different flower combinations up together, waiting for the one that captured my eye in just the right way,” she said.
Mother’s Day arrives every May, but there’s always that moment of when we ask, what gift could possibly reflect the sentiment, the love, the gratitude we hope to give?
Sometimes, it can be simple, a random act of kindness, breakfast in bed, a family outing, a surprise dinner. But this year, go beyond the basics and make sure the moms in your life know you care on Sunday with these suggestions.
Tip: On finding the perfect flowers
“When you look at something beautiful, it triggers an emotional response,” Bruns said. “Beauty makes us feel. When you give someone flowers, you’re giving them beauty, good feelings and smiles.”
Go for flowers with a longer vase-life like roses, tulips, ranunculus or carnations.
Incorporate a memory or name.
For example, if a mother’s name is Lily, incorporate lilies into the arrangement.
Go in person and look for something that may catch the eye. Be sure to pay attention to the overall health and smell of the flowers.
Whenever possible buy from local growers and farmers markets. Don’t know of any? Contact a local florist.
“Flowers are most appreciated when they are least expected,” Bruns said. “Take time to celebrate your mom as often as you can. Even if it’s a quick text to tell her you’re thinking of her – it’ll make her day.”
Tip: On getting outdoors
Join the national event Cyclofemme, which promotes Mother’s Day self-led bike rides intended to celebrate women and the freedom that biking brings.
The Steamboat Springs version of the Cyclofemme Ride is a local monthly ride that invites women to get out and ride in a no-pressure, casual format.
“This can be a great way for mothers to get out and take some time for themselves on the bike, to feel healthy and empowered,” said Holly Weik, who organized the first Cyclofemme ride last year on Mother’s Day.
All levels of riders are welcome, and it’s a no-fee, no-drop event. Mileage and format (road or mountain) depends on who shows up and what they want to do. The default she said is about 20 miles of road riding because many mountain bike trails are not dry enough yet early in the season.
Weik will hold Cyclofemme rides throughout the summer on the second Sunday of the month.
