‘Monster’ winter storm to start Tuesday in Steamboat Springs

Moderate to heavy snow on Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to bring “significant accumulations” to all elevations in the Steamboat Springs area, according to local meteorologist Mike Weissbluth.

After snow accumulations Sunday, Weissbluth, who posts twice a week forecasts to SnowAlarm.com, said a break in the weather Monday will come before, “the fire hose of moisture produces moderate to heavy snow thanks to westerly winds impinging on the Park Range.”

“Snow fall rates around an inch per hour and increasing winds with gusts above 30 mph will make travel hazardous over Rabbit Ears Pass by Tuesday afternoon,” he added.

Later in the day and into Wednesday morning, Weissbluth said travel over the pass, “will likely degrade further and perhaps become impossible.”

The local meteorologist said the heaviest snow should wind down by Wednesday afternoon, “though snowfall will likely linger through Thanksgiving morning as the rest of the stretched storm passes overhead.”

“Total snow fall accumulations will be impressive, with mid-mountain and above seeing 1-2 feet by Wednesday morning and another 6-12 inches by Thanksgiving morning,” added Weissbluth
