Missing 2-year-old found

A 2-year-old boy was found in good condition in a home in the Copper Mountain Estates subdivision about an hour after he was reported missing late Saturday afternoon.

Kyle Higgins was reported missing shortly after 5 p.m. from Indian Trails No. 45. Muted cries alerted a police officer to the boy’s presence inside a home at Indian Trails No. 49 shortly after 6 p.m., said Sgt. Dale Coyner of the Steamboat Springs Police Department.

No one else was in the home, where Kyle has played in the past. Somehow the boy had managed to let himself into the house and shut the door behind him, Coyner said.

In addition to six police officers from the Steamboat Springs Police Department, the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol, about 75 neighbors were out searching for the boy.

“I was very impressed by how quickly and efficiently the neighbors came out looking for the kid,” Coyner said.
