MissFit: Lessons learned from 25-hour bike race

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Think you have what it takes to endure a 25-hour mountain bike race?
Before you think too hard — the answer is “yes.”
Surviving can be through a race or in life when change takes form through new parenting practices, diets or finding equilibrium with work and home. Whatever it may be, it takes grit. Now, it’s time to unlock it.
Tips for surviving a test of human endurance
1. Prep, then prep some more
Have all the details prepared in advance so that you don’t have to think. Whether this is throwing a meal in the crockpot for dinner tonight, laying out your workout clothes the night before, making a list and checking it twice, or reading up on your next vacation, have it organized and prepped. You will be thankful that you did.
2. Hydrate
We must consume vast amounts of water on a daily basis to keep our systems hydrated, alert and ready for anything. Drink half your body weight in ounces daily. Plus your skin will look fantastic.
3. Sleep
Just do it. We need sleep to properly function, workout, show up, be a friend, be ourselves. Sleep when you can. That might look like a 20-minute catnap as your baby sleeps or going to bed an hour earlier than usual. Make it a priority.
4. Stay healthy
Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. This is a big one and takes lots of work and practice and dedication. So, just pick one area to work on this month and do something simple to stay healthy — a couple of drops of Kick-Ass Immune in your morning tea, a 15-minute afternoon walk, a quick check-in with an old friend, a five-minute meditation or a daily gratitude. Pick one and do it every week.
5. Find your tribe of support
Surround yourself with people who support you no matter what. Support takes the form of a meal when you are in need, a clean pair of socks, a thank-you card, a high-five, a simple favor, listening, a shoulder to lean on or a friend simply asking, “How can I support you today?”
