Minds in Motion finds home in new location on Hilltop Parkway in Steamboat
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — After four years of helping the residents of Steamboat Springs with their mental health needs, Minds in Motion has finally found its home.
“We were renting and then I really wanted to have a home for the business, so that we could grow and to make it our own space and make it how we wanted it to be,”said Angela Melzer, who owns the business along with partner Lisa Wilkinson. “I bought the location up on Hilltop and remodeled very specifically for privacy and our counselors.”
That means the new home of Minds in Motion has 6-inch walls as opposed to the 4-inch walls found in most businesses, thicker insulation, thicker doors and other noise canceling features. She wanted the clients who come through her doors to feel comfortable, and she wanted to protect their privacy. She also likes the new location because it offers more parking than Minds in Motion had at the business’s old location on 11th Street downtown.
Minds in Motion, which moved to 1169 Hilltop Parkway, takes a comprehensive whole body and mind approach to mental wellness. It incorporates a multidisciplinary team that includes Melzer a neuroscience-based psychotherapist and her partner Wilkinson, a nurse practitioner. The pair has teamed up with Dr. Phaedra Fegley, who is the acting functional medicine psychiatric physician and counselors Jennifer Zuccone, Denise Martinez and Matt Larock . The group works in collaboration in one facility that fosters resilience, optimism, wisdom, social engagement, mindfulness and bring science education.
“Our company works with mental health very specifically, but we approach it very differently. Because we have a medical background, we look at all systems when we are looking at mental health, “Melzer said. “When we do treatment, we treat it with other systems other than just talk therapy. There is really nobody in town that does it that way.”
Melzer worked for 12 years as a neuroscience-based occupational therapist and acted as assistant driver of SportMed at Yampa Valley. She went back to school a few years ago to get a masters degree in social work after which she created, opened and directed the Integrated Health Department at Yampa Valley Medical Center and ran it for four years.
In that role she worked to weave physical medicine and traditional medicine with alternative and psychological approaches. She left Yampa Valley Medical Center to open her own clinic, Minds in Motion in 2014.
“We have tried to fill in the cracks for what has been missing in Steamboat,” she said. ‘It’s something that I have been really focused on in the past eight years. I’ve tried to figure out where the cracks are in the community.”
She said moving to the new location will allow Minds in Motion to serve the community by offering a facility tailored to mental health care that will allow the business to expand services into the future.
“What makes us very different from any other mental health place in town is that we incorporate body and mind together,” Melzer said. “With trauma, the nervous system is affected, and we address mental health from the whole entire body. Mental health is a huge issue in this town, and we are really trying to address it differently.”
