Methodical Columbine beats Steamboat hockey, 5-3

— For a few periods Saturday night, it looked as though the Steamboat Springs High School hockey team would contend for its first road win of the season.

But Columbine kept plugging away, scoring four goals over the final two periods to beat the visiting Sailors, 5-3. Steamboat is now 2-16 with just one game remaining this winter.

The Rebels scored the opening goal in the first period, one that was answered by Steamboat’s Scott Brown to make it a 1-1 contest.

Columbine dropped in another pair of goals just 25 seconds apart in the second period to open up a 3-1 lead. Again, Steamboat answered, this time from Jack McNamara’s stick to make it 3-2 heading into the last 17 minutes.

Columbine proved to be too much from there. The Rebels put in two more goals to create a 5-2 gap that was shrunk a little by Sailors forward Jordan Gorr with about a minute left.

Steamboat was out-shot, 38-17, on the night. Sailors goalie Jackson Draper had 33 saves.

The Sailors will complete their season on Friday at Mullen (5-11). The puck drops at 8:30 p.m.
