Melius places fifth in Salida

Melinda Mawdsley

Steamboat Springs junior Joey Melius placed fifth at 171 pounds to lead the Sailors in a weekend tournament at Salida.

Melius was the only Steamboat wrestler to place at the 20-team Rob Mickel tournament hosted Saturday by the southern Colorado school.

Steamboat opened the weekend with a quadrangular at Salida High School on Friday. The early start of Saturday’s tournament, however, changed the meet from a triangular into a dual with four teams.

Steamboat squared off against Class 2A Antonito and lost.

“They were very good,” Sailors coach Jay Muhme said. “I would look at it more as a scrimmage than a match. We moved (wrestlers) around so everyone had a match. Most were exhibition matches.”

With regionals approaching, Muhme said it’s hard to guess where the Steamboat wrestlers will be seeded because the Sailors haven’t faced many regional opponents. That will change today when Steamboat hosts a triangular with Battle Mountain and Rifle.

The meet has been moved up to 5 p.m. That is a time change from the original schedule.

In addition to Battle Mountain and Rifle, the following teams are in Steamboat’s region: Broomfield, Delta, Moffat County, Montezuma-Cortez, Montrose, Palisade and Summit.
